Pasture, Range, and Forage (“Rainfall”) Insurance Deadline December 1
The Pasture, Range, and Forage Insurance (PRF) deadline to sign up for coverage for 2023 is on December 1. Often referred to as “rainfall insurance,” this product can be a useful risk management tool for landowners and livestock producers. The product provides insurance coverage for grazing pastures, rangeland, and perennial forage acres. Essentially, PRF allows a landowner to insure a certain percentage of historic rainfall in the area where they own property. If the actual rainfall in the area falls below the insured percentage, the landowner receives an… Read More →

Happy Friday! Here are some of the agricultural law stories in the news over the past couple of weeks. *Solar sheep? NPR recently ran an article looking at the potential use of sheep in conjunction with solar farms. In the Northeast, there have been farmers who contract with solar farms to graze their sheep under the panels. Not all companies will consider this, but it might be an option to discuss if you are looking at signing a solar lease or have animals and are seeking grazing land. … Read More →
Reviewing Your Liability Insurance Policy
This article was first published in the Progressive Cattle Magazine. One of the first steps anyone owning or leasing land should take is securing adequate liability insurance. Liability insurance offers critical protection in the event someone is injured on the insured’s property. Liability insurance offers two key benefits to the insured. First, it provides coverage up to the policy limits that will be paid out in the event a covered claim occurs. Second, it provides a defense to the landowner in the event a covered claim is… Read More →

Happy Friday! I spent last week in Washington, DC for our American Agricultural Law Association Conference. It was a great event and, to top it off, I was able to attend oral argument at the United States Supreme Court in County of Maui v. Hawaii Wildlife Foundation, a water law case I’ve been closely watching. It was a bit like going to to the Super Bowl for an ag law nerd like me! On Thursday, I’ll have a podcast all about the oral argument from several of us who… Read More →
